Laughter is one of those human behaviours that feels so natural that we rarely stop to wonder why it exists. A joke lands at exactly the right moment, a friend makes an unexpected remark, or someone begins laughing so uncontrollably that everyone else joins in without even knowing what happened.
Within seconds, breathing changes, facial muscles contract, the voice produces a strange series of rhythmic sounds, and normal conversation temporarily becomes impossible. From a purely practical point of view, laughter seems almost absurd. Yet humans everywhere do it, babies begin doing it long before they understand humour, and forms of laughter-like behaviour can be found elsewhere in the animal world.
That last point offers an important clue.
Laughter probably did not begin with jokes, comedy, or clever wordplay.
Its evolutionary roots appear to reach much further back, into the social lives of our primate ancestors.
Chimpanzees and other great apes produce breathy, laughter-like vocalisations during play, particularly when they are tickled, chased, or wrestling with one another. Rats even produce ultrasonic vocalisations during playful interactions and tickling, although calling these sounds “laughter” in exactly the human sense remains debated. What these behaviours suggest is that the foundations of laughter may be far older than human language.
Play can be surprisingly dangerous without signals that explain what is happening. Two young animals chasing, biting, grabbing, and knocking each other down may look remarkably similar to animals actually fighting.
A playful vocalisation can therefore communicate something extremely useful: this is not an attack. It allows individuals to practice physical skills, test boundaries, and strengthen relationships without constantly turning rough interaction into genuine conflict.
Seen from this perspective, the ancestor of human laughter may have functioned less like a response to comedy and more like an ancient social safety signal.
Humans inherited that social function and expanded it enormously. We often imagine laughter as something produced by humour, but observations of ordinary conversation suggest otherwise. People laugh after perfectly unremarkable statements, during greetings, when easing awkwardness, while showing affection, and sometimes simply because another person is laughing.
Much of everyday laughter is not really saying, “That was funny.” It is communicating something closer to, “We understand each other,” “I am comfortable with you,” or “Everything between us is fine.”

This helps explain why laughter is so contagious. Hearing someone laugh can activate neural systems involved in preparing facial and vocal responses, making joining in remarkably easy. In a group, laughter can spread before everyone has even understood what caused it.
The phenomenon becomes particularly obvious when someone begins laughing uncontrollably and others soon follow despite having no idea what the original joke was. The information being transmitted is no longer the joke itself. The emotional state of the group has become the message.
There may have been considerable evolutionary value in such synchronisation. Human survival depended heavily on cooperation long before cities, governments, or written rules existed. Our ancestors hunted, gathered food, raised children, defended themselves, and shared knowledge in groups where knowing whom to trust mattered enormously.
Anything that helped create and maintain social bonds could therefore become valuable. Shared laughter can reduce tension, signal affiliation, and create a brief feeling of emotional alignment between people.
A group laughing together is, for a moment, behaving almost like a single social unit.
The body reinforces the experience. Laughter involves coordinated activity across brain regions concerned with emotion, movement, vocalisation, and social perception. It alters breathing and recruits muscles across the face, chest, and abdomen.
Positive social laughter is also associated with reward processes in the brain, which helps explain why laughing with other people can feel so satisfying. The pleasure is not necessarily an accidental side effect. Evolution often preserves behaviours partly because the reward attached to them encourages us to repeat actions that historically benefited survival or social connection.
Only later in our evolutionary story does laughter appear to have become deeply entangled with humour. Human brains developed an extraordinary ability to recognise patterns, predict what will happen next, and notice when reality violates those predictions. Much humour exploits precisely this machinery.
A joke creates an expectation and then suddenly overturns it. A pun forces two meanings into the same phrase. An absurd situation presents something that is wrong according to our mental model of the world, but harmless enough to enjoy.
The ancient play signal seems to have found a new home inside the increasingly complicated human mind.
That may also explain one of humour’s most interesting boundaries: something often stops being funny when it becomes genuinely threatening. Someone slipping harmlessly on a wet floor may provoke laughter; someone being seriously injured usually does not. Teasing between close friends can be hilarious because everyone understands the underlying relationship, while the same words from a hostile stranger can feel insulting.
Humour frequently operates in a strange territory where expectations, rules, or dignity are violated while the brain simultaneously judges the situation to be safe enough.

In a sense, the old message of playful laughter—this is not dangerous—may still be hiding beneath modern comedy.
Yet laughter does more than celebrate safety. Sometimes we laugh precisely when we are uncomfortable. Nervous laughter can appear during embarrassing conversations, frightening situations, social mistakes, or moments when we simply do not know how to respond.
It may help regulate emotional tension while also signalling peaceful intentions to the people around us. The laugh says something words may struggle to express: this situation is awkward, but I am not trying to make it worse.
This is why laughter can reveal relationships so quickly. We laugh differently with close friends than with strangers. Private jokes become tiny pieces of shared history, almost meaningless to outsiders but powerful to the people who understand them.
Couples, families, classrooms, workplaces, and entire cultures develop their own patterns of humour. To understand what a group laughs about is often to understand something about its boundaries, memories, anxieties, and values.
Modern comedy may therefore be an elaborate cultural structure built upon something extremely ancient. Stand-up routines, sitcoms, memes, satire, and ridiculous videos seem far removed from primates playing together millions of years ago, yet the basic social machinery remains surprisingly recognisable.
Something unexpected happens, the brain decides that the violation is safe, laughter signals the reaction, and other people are invited to share it.
Perhaps that is why laughter feels simultaneously personal and communal. We experience it inside our own bodies, yet it constantly reaches outward. It interrupts speech but strengthens conversation; it appears during happiness but also embarrassment and fear; it can respond to sophisticated language while beginning in babies who cannot yet speak.
Long before humans learned to tell jokes, laughter may already have been helping social animals communicate that play was safe and companionship was welcome. Comedy came later. The laugh itself was already doing something far more important: helping individuals become a group.

Laughter seems so ordinary that we rarely think of it as an evolutionary behaviour. Yet looking beyond jokes reveals something much older: a social signal connected to play, safety, trust, and belonging. What fascinates me most is that something as simple as laughing with another person may carry traces of interactions that began long before human language existed.
