There is a reason we look at someone’s eyes when we are trying to understand what they really feel. A smile can be polite. A voice can be controlled. Words can be carefully selected, rehearsed, or even deliberately misleading. But the eyes seem to operate slightly closer to whatever is happening underneath. Fear can widen them, affection can soften a gaze, discomfort can send it elsewhere, and excitement can subtly change the pupils before we have consciously decided how to respond.
Long before humans became skilled with words, the eyes were already part of our social language.
And even now, surrounded by speech, screens, and written communication, we continue to read that ancient language almost automatically.
Human eyes are unusually visible compared with those of many other primates. The white part of the eye, the sclera, is especially conspicuous in our species, creating a strong contrast with the iris and pupil. That contrast makes the direction of our gaze relatively easy for another person to detect. A tiny movement can reveal whether someone is looking directly at us, toward the door, at something dangerous, or at another person across the room.
From an evolutionary perspective, this visibility may have been enormously useful for a highly cooperative species. Following another person’s gaze could help a group notice food, threats, opportunities, or the intentions of companions without anyone making a sound.
This may help explain why gaze remains such a powerful social signal. Direct eye contact can indicate attention, interest, confidence, affection, challenge, or simply a willingness to engage. Looking away can mean boredom or discomfort, but it can just as easily reflect shyness, concentration, respect, cultural expectations, or an attempt to think. The meaning rarely comes from gaze alone. We interpret it alongside facial expression, posture, context, familiarity, and countless other clues.
Yet our brains are so sensitive to where other people are looking that we often notice a shift of attention almost immediately. Someone across a crowded room looks toward the entrance, and before we consciously think about it, we may find ourselves looking there too.
Hidden at the centre of this communication system is an even subtler signal: the pupil. Pupils constantly change size as the iris regulates how much light enters the eye, but illumination is not the only influence. Activity in the autonomic nervous system can also alter pupil diameter. Emotional arousal, mental effort, surprise, uncertainty, interest, and stress can all be accompanied by changes in pupil size. These movements are usually tiny and largely beyond deliberate control.

The pupil is therefore doing something remarkable: while helping the eye manage light, it can also provide a faint outward trace of what the nervous system is experiencing inside.
We usually do not stand in conversation consciously measuring another person’s pupils. Yet research suggests that pupil changes can influence social perception and that humans can respond to them without necessarily being aware of what they have noticed. Dilated pupils have sometimes been associated with greater arousal or interest, although their meaning is highly dependent on circumstances.
A dark room can enlarge pupils without any emotional significance at all, while medications, fatigue, cognitive effort, and numerous physiological factors can affect them too. This is why the popular idea that someone’s pupils can simply reveal whether they are attracted to you is far too neat. Biology rarely gives us such convenient subtitles.
The surrounding muscles of the eyes provide additional information. Genuine amusement often involves more than the mouth; muscles around the eyes may contract, producing the familiar creases associated with a spontaneous smile. Fear can increase the visible area around the eyes, while sadness may alter the eyelids and brows in ways we recognise almost instantly. We become remarkably experienced at reading these combinations because we spend our lives surrounded by faces.
By adulthood, much of this processing happens so quickly that we experience the conclusion before noticing the individual clues. We simply feel that someone looks worried, suspicious, delighted, exhausted, or uncomfortable.
That speed can create the illusion that eyes contain some mysterious ability to reveal truth. They do not.
Eyes provide signals, not confessions.
A person avoiding eye contact is not automatically lying, just as someone maintaining steady eye contact is not necessarily honest. Anxiety, personality, neurodiversity, social customs, relationships, and the situation itself can dramatically change how people use their gaze.
In some cultures, prolonged direct eye contact can communicate confidence and sincerity; in other circumstances, it may feel confrontational or disrespectful. The human brain is an impressive reader of faces, but it is not an infallible lie detector.
What makes the eyes fascinating is not that they reveal one secret emotion with certainty, but that they participate in a constant exchange of information. Imagine two people having an ordinary conversation. Their gaze meets and separates. Pupils adjust. Eyelids move. Brows rise slightly. Attention shifts toward objects being discussed. One person notices the other’s reaction and unconsciously changes their own expression in response. Much of this happens beneath deliberate awareness. Conversation is therefore not simply an exchange of sentences.
It is also a continuous negotiation conducted through bodies, faces, and eyes.

Screens make this especially noticeable. A text message can contain exactly the same words as a face-to-face statement and still feel strangely ambiguous. We add emojis, punctuation, GIFs, and reaction icons partly because written language has removed many of the signals normally supplied by the human face.
Even video calls can feel subtly different because camera position prevents perfect mutual gaze: looking directly into someone’s onscreen eyes often means not looking directly into the camera. Something as small as the direction of a few millimetres of visible eye movement can alter the feeling of connection.
Perhaps this sensitivity exists because human survival has always depended heavily on understanding other humans. We needed to recognise fear before danger reached us, cooperation before approaching a stranger, anger before conflict escalated, and affection before relationships could deepen.
Language eventually gave us extraordinary precision, but it did not replace the older communication systems beneath it. We still raise our eyebrows, follow one another’s gaze, search faces for reassurance, and notice when someone’s eyes suddenly change.
That is why the familiar phrase about the eyes being a window into the soul has survived for so long, even if science would phrase it more cautiously. Eyes do not expose a hidden inner self with perfect accuracy. They offer something more interesting: small, imperfect, often subconscious signals produced by a nervous system constantly responding to the world. We have evolved alongside those signals and become extraordinarily attentive to them.
Sometimes, before a person has found the words to tell us what they feel, their eyes have already begun the conversation.

Reviews of pupillometry also stress an important point reflected in the article: dilation indicates changes in processing or arousal but cannot, by itself, tell us exactly which emotion someone is experiencing.
